People can become gravely sick from breathing the carbon monoxide (CO) that may be produced from the incomplete burning of common heating fuels like wood, coal, fuel oil, kerosene, natural gas and propane. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless so it’s difficult to detect. Common indicators of CO contamination are:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Nausea
  • Eye irritation
  • Dying house planes or small animals
  • Condensation on cool, indoor surfaces
  • Discoloration/soot buildup at warm air outlets of the heating system

If you suspect the presence of CO, get everyone to fresh air, open windows and doors to air out the structure and call your local HVAC technician or Central Prairie Co-op at 620.422.3207.
